These field grey shoulder boards are associated with the well-known Großdeutschland formation of the German Wehrmacht, one of the most prominent and highly regarded units of the German Army during the Second World War.
The unit originated as the Wachregiment Berlin, a ceremonial guard formation stationed in the German capital. It was later expanded and reorganized into the Infantry Regiment Großdeutschland, which eventually developed into the Division Großdeutschland in 1942.
During the war, the Großdeutschland formation became one of the most heavily equipped and widely deployed German units, serving primarily on the Eastern Front.
The shoulder boards associated with this unit were typically produced from field grey wool cloth, the standard material used for Wehrmacht field uniforms. A distinctive feature was the embroidered “GD” cypher, representing the abbreviation of Großdeutschland.
Within the German uniform system, shoulder boards indicated both rank and, in certain cases, unit affiliation.
The enlisted versions were constructed with a simple cloth base, internal padding, and a rear tongue with buttonhole, allowing them to be attached to the field tunic (Feldbluse).
Shoulder boards bearing the “GD” cypher are therefore recognized as distinctive insignia associated with the Großdeutschland units of the Wehrmacht during the Second World War.
