Description
The U-Boat War Badge (U-Boot-Kriegsabzeichen) was introduced on 13 October 1939 by Grand Admiral Erich Raeder and modified in 1941 by Admiral Karl Dönitz.
It was awarded to Kriegsmarine submarine crews upon completion of two war patrols, or earlier in cases of wounds, death in action, or exceptional conduct.
The badge design shows a side-profile U-boat surrounded by an oak-leaf wreath, surmounted by the German eagle with swastika. Manufactured in tombak, zinc, or other alloys, badges came in gilt or bronzed finishes, with notable variations among different makers.
The award served both as an official recognition of operational service and as a distinguishing insignia of the U-Boat arm, a crucial yet perilous branch of the German navy.
