Oak Leaves ribbon device, in silver finish, is a reproduction of the small metal attachment used with the higher grade of the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross known in German as Eichenlaub, or Oak Leaves. It was not a separate medal, but an additional device worn on the neck ribbon above the cross to indicate a higher class of the decoration.
The design consists of a compact group of raised oak leaves, usually with clearly defined veins and a balanced, symmetrical arrangement. Oak leaves were a long-standing symbol in German and European military tradition, associated with strength, endurance, continuity and honour. In this version without swords, the focus remains entirely on the oak-leaf motif, making it visually simpler and more restrained than the later grade with crossed swords.
From a technical point of view, original examples were made in silver, often with fineness marks such as “900” and manufacturer codes. Modern reproductions follow the same general form, with a silver-coloured finish, relief leaf details and compact construction, suitable for display, reenactment or uniform completion.
Historically, the Oak Leaves represented the first higher grade above the standard Knight’s Cross. They were awarded to recipients who had already received the Knight’s Cross and were subsequently recognized for further military distinction. Compared with the Oak Leaves with Swords, this version is more minimal: no blades interrupt the leaf structure, so the entire identity of the piece rests on the oak motif itself.
Curiosity: within the Knight’s Cross system, the Oak Leaves formed the starting point of a progressive hierarchy. Later grades added Swords, Diamonds and extremely rare special variants, turning a small ribbon device into one of the most carefully differentiated insignia systems of the period.
