Collar Tabs – 29. Waffen-Grenadier-Division der SS (italienische Nr. 1)
These collar tabs are associated with the 29. Waffen-Grenadier-Division der SS (italienische Nr. 1), a formation composed of Italian volunteers incorporated into the Waffen-SS during the final phase of the Second World War.
The division was formed in 1944 within the framework of military cooperation between Nazi Germany and the Italian Social Republic (Repubblica Sociale Italiana). Its personnel consisted largely of Italian volunteers drawn from several military and paramilitary organizations, including elements of the Guardia Nazionale Repubblicana and other Italian units reorganized under German command.
A distinctive element of the uniform worn by these troops was the use of collar tabs bearing the fasces emblem. Unlike the traditional Waffen-SS collar insignia, which often displayed the well-known SS runes, the Italian formations adopted the fasces, a symbol historically associated with Roman authority and used as a state emblem in Fascist Italy.
The fasces motif was embroidered onto the cloth collar tab, which was worn on the collar of the field tunic as part of the standard uniform configuration.
The 29. Waffen-Grenadier-Division der SS (italienische Nr. 1) operated primarily in Italy during 1944–1945, taking part in security and combat operations during the final stages of the conflict.
