Rigid (“hard shell”) holster for the Walther P38 in black leather, specifically developed to accommodate the Walther P38, adopted in 1938 as the standard sidearm of the German armed forces, replacing the earlier Luger P08 in large-scale production. The holster is constructed using thick, form-molded leather, shaped to create a rigid protective shell that shields the pistol from mechanical damage, dirt, and environmental exposure.
The design incorporates a full-length protective flap with a front closure system, typically consisting of a strap and stud or similar fastening method, ensuring the weapon remains securely retained during movement. A defining feature of P38 holsters is the presence of an integrated spare magazine compartment, positioned on the side or beneath the flap, allowing immediate access to additional ammunition.
On the reverse, the holster is fitted with belt loops, enabling stable attachment to the standard military belt. This configuration ensured both accessibility and retention in field conditions.
Unlike earlier holsters primarily associated with officers, the P38 holster was issued broadly to both officers and enlisted personnel, reflecting the widespread standardization of the pistol across different branches of the armed forces.
The black leather finish is typical of wartime production, particularly in later years, when manufacturing processes were increasingly optimized for efficiency. These holsters represent a clear example of functional military design combined with industrial simplification, characteristic of German equipment during the Second World War.
